Video Inspiration #28 – Love Kills Demons

Video Inspiration is a weekly(ish) post where we either feature a specific artist or show a sort of “best of” list of videos we’ve discovered during the week. Everything here may not be brand new, but we felt it worth sharing with the community. If you have good finds that you’d like to share, please feel free to send your links to nathan@abduzeedo.com with “video inspiration” in the subject line.

It seems like lately the vidoes that I’ve been drawn to the most are the ones that take me behind the scenes in an artist’s life. I enjoy getting to know the people behind the work and observe them going through their own process – or in the case of Chris Rubino in Love Kills Demons – discovering their process for themselves. I found this series to be immensely inspirational and I highly recommend carving out enough time to watch all the videos. You can also head on over to their main website and view the film in it’s entirety as one video.

Love Kills Demons is 12 short films by Jim Helton. Much like Bertrand Russell’s definition of electricity these films are “not so much a thing as a way things happen.” They are a window into the spirit of an artist looking for change. Over the span of one year filmmaker Jim Helton documented New York-based artist Chris Rubino while he searched for a new direction in his work. In the process we see screenprinting, drawing, painting, wandering as well as a peak inside the workings of a studio and an artist’s process. The final 12 part film that is Love Kills Demons takes a look behind the proverbial curtain exposing some of the mystery of creation supported by the otherworldly sounds of Big Blood.

Evolution

One of the things I?ve tried to maintain with the branding around here is a building on top of what currently exists. Rather than completely toss out the visuals of designs and previous logos, I like to keep hints to the past. Part of that helps familiarity, but it also maintains a path of evolution rather than revolution.

evolution

Last week I rolled out an updated SimpleBits mark and simplified layout. I started tinkering a few months ago over on Dribbble and after some great feedback, settled on hex shape borrowed from the inner cube of the old mark, which was carried over from the original pixel art logo way back when. The new mark should work far better at smaller sizes and applications (which was the reason for the tweaking) and seemed fitting to bring back the original orange from the first (extremely dated) design from years ago (11px Verdana still looks good, no?).

Along with the new logo I made some adjustments to the template here as well. Most of those changes centered on a new typeface: FF Milo Web Pro which is versitle in various sizes, looks great in all caps and can be served up via Typekit (you need to purchase the font from FontFont first, which then unlocks it for use with Typekit).

Here?s to personal sites being a perpetual sandbox.
